In Loving Memory of Lois V. Stewart-Stephens

A Life Well Lived and Deeply Cherished

Lois Versell Stewart-Stephens, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, was born to Preston and Lillie Stewart on November 15, 1933, and peacefully transitioned to her final resting place on February 26, 2026. 

Lois completed her grade school education in Fuquay-Varina County North Carolina public schools. She attended Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina and later earned her license in cosmetology in Washington DC. After completing her schooling, Lois became the first black hair salon business owner in Glenarden, Maryland where she lived and passionately served her community. On her life’s journey, Lois mentored many whose lives were enriched by the positive impact of her wisdom, humor, and gentle guidance, she was always ready to lend a helping hand. Lois became a foster mother, opening her heart and home to many children in need. She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Glenarden, Maryland where she was an usher until an unexpected illness.

Lois was known to be high-spirited, quick-witted, and had the ability to bring lots of laughter to every gathering with her humor and she enjoyed creating memories with family and friends. In her later years, Lois gained a new extended family of wonderful and caring friends at the Laurel Lakes senior community apartments in Laurel, Maryland where she lived for over twenty years. 

Her legacy of kindness, love, strength, and community service was a testament to the generosity, compassion, and commitment to those she held dear. She will be truly missed by all who had the privilege to know her.

Lois was preceded in death by her beloved mother Lillie Stewart, father Preston Stewart, sisters Margaret, Ozerine, and Laynese, brothers Harold, Rozell, JD, Linwood, Leroy, Raymond, Clarence, Glenn, and Carl Lee.  

Lois is survived by her daughters Sherita (Alvin) McNair, Cynthia (Cindy) Settles, sons Marvin (Annette) Stephens, Larry (Juelnita) Stephens, her adored grandchildren Dion (Nekaus) Parker, Derrick Stephens, Keisha Stephens, Toy Settles, Shiloh Stephens, Alexis Stephens, Alvin (Juanita) McNair Jr., Corey (Alicia) McNair, Ty Tinsley, Kintre Bryant, twenty-one great grandchildren, and a number of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and cherished friends.

Lois will be deeply missed and never forgotten.
